Good advertising is becoming more and more necessary for business survival in this economy, and having good graphic arts skills could be what makes you the most money in your new business.

 

Potential clients are all trying to get more business so there should be plenty of work for a new talented designer in this field. It is not enough to do good work, yours must stand out from the crowd so it brings in the business.

 

Study magazines such as Entrepreneur to find potential clients for your graphic arts service. Contact advertising agencies, some of the lesser known magazines, and local small businesses. Check the new business listings in newpapers both local and statewide and the New Business Registry to find businesses that are just starting out.

 

Make sample ads for their business then make an appointment and show them the designs you have made for them. Ask what you can do to help them with their advertising.

You are just starting your business so work to create a niche in the market. At this point in your new career you do not want to compete head on with the more established design firms.

 

Advertise by placing ads in the yellow pages, the internet yellow pages, newspapers, social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, word of mouth, passing out business cards, and on your business website.

 

Let the world know you are in business and ready to serve them. Also, consider doing design work for charities for free to get your name out there.

 

Your website should have pictures of you, your qualifications, and show examples of the types of design you do with the prices broken down according to number of units and colors used, time involved, etc.

 

Explain why clients should hire you instead of your competitors. Such as, I have the necessary qualifications to help you and are not backlogged at this time so I can complete your order much faster.

 

Get creative with your ads. I also recommend giving a discount on work to get clients at first, or for those who order online.
